For anybody not in the know, “THPS 3” is the greatest video game of all time. And after my incessant harassing of Activision to finally remaster the third and fourth games in the series, it finally happened this month. It remains the GOAT of not just sports games, or of action-y simulation games, but of all video games ever made.
Hyperbole aside, there’s one feature that I highly recommend you turn on the second the game begins. It made the game so much more fun, so much easier, and quite frankly just better in every way. It also makes the fourth game more accurate to the original since that game didn’t have any timers in it.
All you have to do is change the classic two minute timer to 60 minutes, and voila! You have now freed yourself from the burden of nostalgia and of cramped fingers.
Having an entire hour to skate at your convenience, completing challenges without fear of being rushed, is so wonderful. You don’t have to replay the level over and over, restarting if you couldn’t get something done. Hell, even getting the sick score over time instead of in one big combo is a MASSIVE quality of life improvement.
It makes a perfect game that much better, and if you want to add the cherry on top of the dessert, listen to a playlist of the original game’s soundtracks combined with the new songs. Don’t let the cheap bastards at Microsoft screw you over! You can do a mash-up of any song from any soundtrack to any game, and that’ll make your play sessions actually like the old games.
No one will ever deprive me of hearing the best song from this game! NO ONE! It’s not on Spotify or in any remaster, but Henry Rollins must be heard at all costs!
