It was, unambiguously, a pretty bad year in terms of geopolitics, but it was more than halfway decent as far as video game releases go. “Clair Obscur” came out of nowhere to dominate the GOTY discussion, but the likes of “Silksong,” “Donkey Kong Bananza,” and “Blue Prince” held their own.
Sadly, this is also the year in which generative AI became a sticking point. “Clair Obscur” got caught with AI assets in the game at launch to the chagrin of everyone — me included. Even beloved indie darling “The Roottrees are Dead” was based on an original work that relied on gen AI. Talk about complicated feelings!
Now’s your chance to go back in time, and relive 2025 in our personal lists, a meta collection of the whole industry’s GOTY picks, and the podcasts in which we deliver brutal dunks on the likes of Randy Pitchford.
